Nicole Wong

NICOLE WONG liked to draw everywhere as a little girl –especially on the walls behind the furniture, where her mom would find the drawings years later. She graduated from RISD with a BFA in Illustration and continues to take art classes in different media and techniques, such as collage, photography, and egg tempera painting. She uses pencil, ink, watercolor, and digital media to create her graceful paintings. Nicole is an award-winning artist who has illustrated over twenty picture books, including No Monkeys, No Chocolate by Melissa Stewart which was a Junior Library Guild selection. Nicole lives in Fall River, Massachusetts, with her husband, daughter, two sleepy kittens and two hyperactive pups.

★”Milford tucks strange places, odd artifacts, and people with mysterious pasts into a suspenseful tale properly supplied with sinister villains, clever twists, large explosions, and heartbreaking sacrifices…A tale to sweep new and confirmed fans into the author’s distinctively imagined blend of history, magic, mythology, chemistry, and nautical lore. “—Kirkus, STARRED review
★”The engrossing adventure, as well as the thoughtful depiction of a blended, multicultural family, are all draws enough on their own, but the glimpse of Milford’s bewitching world-building will leave readers eager to track down her other novels.”—BooklistSTARRED review

★”The inn is full of its own secrets. Its rooms and layout will feel familiar to Greenglass House fans, but it’s set earlier in time, with a steampunk focus on cartography, gearwork, and combustion. At times wryly humorous and at others marvelously unnerving and superbly menacing, this novel delights. Deliciously immersive and captivating. “—Kirkus Reviews starred review
★”At once a deeply satisfying standalone and a smart addition to Milford’s expansive world, this elegant feat of telescopic storytelling serves as both map and key, offering singular stories of consequence that slowly, artfully reveal an immersive mystery—one that will dazzle seasoned Milford fans and kindle new ones.”Publishers Weekly, starred review
“If the Canterbury Tales were filled to the brim with magic and mystery, you couldn’t find a better collection than what Milford has produced here.”—Betsy Bird, Fuse #8

by Mark Karlins

★”See, hear, touch, taste, smell…and imagine poetry all around you. . . .The illustrations are just as thoughtfully crafted. Precisely rendered, the artwork is soft, warm, and captivating, offering vastly different perspectives and diverse characters who make up an apparently North American neighborhood that feels both familiar and new for a boy discovering how to view the world the way a poet does. Earth tones, coupled with bright yellows, pinks, and greens, draw readers in and encourage them to linger over each spread.”—Kirkus Reviews starred review
★”A beautiful book on making art out of observations.” —School Library Journal, starred review
“Wong’s illustrations bring them in even deeper, progressing from simple portraits of the home to streets of city neighborhoods to stunning nighttime scenes by an illuminated river. The caring relationship between grandfather and grandson is the glue that holds the story together.”—Booklist
