Award-winning author and illustrator MôNICA CARNESI hails from sunny Brazil. She is crazy about (in no particular order) children’s books, art supplies and animals. She draws, paints and doodles constantly and is building her own personal library of picture books from all over the world. Working in pen and ink, watercolor, and color pencil media, Monica uses loose lines and white space to aim for art with a simple, uncluttered look. Monica works as a librarian at The Free Library of Philadelphia.  A perfect fit for her interests!

★ “An edge-of-your-seat adventure story, based on a true story, for the very young — with a text that also works beautifully as a beginning reader for older children.” —Horn Book (Starred Review)

★ “With its gripping plot and simple text, this has natural early reader possibilities, as well as read aloud merits, and it’ll be a treat for kids looking for an international dog story to counterbalance the melancholy of Hachiko.”—BCCB (Starred Review)

“A terrifying adventure set against an icy backdrop turns into a heartwarming tale of one canine’s remarkable courage and resilience.  This lost little dog will easily find a place in children’s hearts.”—Kirkus Reviews

“In this debut, Carnesi conveys the immensity of the scenery as well as the intimacy of the dog’s tale.  And the fear abates with the story’s reassuringly warm and cozy ending.”—The New York Times Book Review

“The book presents a clear problem and gratifying solution in simple, engaging language coupled with appealing watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations; it is an excellent choice for read-alouds.” —School Library Journal

“Debut author/illustrator Carnesi’s cartoon-styled watercolors and spare text provide a suspenseful yet reassuring account of the real-life rescue of a dog that was swept out into the Baltic Sea on an ice floe in January 2010.  The book’s small trim size complements the cozy, feel-good conclusion.”—Publishers Weekly

“Though delivered simply, this tale is intrinsically powerful — kids know how slippery ice can be, and Dog’s loneliness and helplessness is similarly relatable.  Carnesi’s soft, comforting watercolors make great use of wide tableaux of tiny Dog almost lost among the huge sea of blue water and white icebergs.”—Booklist

SLEEPOVER WITH BEATRICE AND BEAR by Monica Carnesi is featured on the CBC “Wonderland of Winter” seasonal showcase

★ “The author of Little Dog Lost (Penguin, 2012) has another winner… Carnesi’s sweet illustrations perfectly capture the joys of friendship, the frustration of being left behind, and the satisfaction in making something for a friend.  The spare text is an excellent complement to the lively illustrations… Sure to be a hit in every library.”—School Library Journal (Starred Review)

“In a gentle tale for the very young, a rabbit named Beatrice finds an ingenious way to share winter with her hibernating best friend, Bear. Winningly sweet.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Carnesi (Little Dog Lost) is one of those authors who make storytelling appear effortless and intuitive while conveying a wealth of empathy, personality, and humor.  There isn’t a wasted word in her text, and the watercolors brim with good will and just a touch of silliness.  Her take on maintaining connection in the face of separation feels both timeless and very much of the moment.” —Publishers Weekly

“Appealing ink, watercolor, and colored-pencil illustrations draw readers in with their energy and emotion, while plenty of white space and a variety of page layouts and perspectives provide strong pacing.  The succinct text and illustrations work seamlessly together to tell the story with humor and feeling, using page turns to heighten drama.  In this spirited  look at friendship through the seasons, Beatrice ultimately finds a way to enjoy that long winter and include her sleeping friend Bear, too.”—Horn Book

“Given the perennial demand for books to support classroom units on winter and hibernation, libraries may want to consider multiple copies of this pleasing picture book, an excellent read-aloud choice for preschool and kindergarten classes.”—Booklist

“The artwork, done in India ink, watercolor and colored pencil, has a cheerful vibrancy both in its vividly seasonal palettes and buoyant textures. This would work well as part of a unit or storytime on winter or hibernation, or as simply an affectionate portrait of friendship that accommodates personal differences.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
